A childhood friend of the defendant testified in court Wednesday about the night his younger brother was killed in a robbery.
Patrick Neely took the stand on the second day of testimony in the trial for Rashawan Carter, 27, of Aiken. Carter has pleaded not guilty to being a part of a May 2015 home invasion at a Brown Lane residence in Hahn Village that ended with the death of one of Carter’s friends, 21-year-old Darius Scruggs.
Solicitors say Carter and Scruggs helped plan the robbery, along with Richard Jackson, 26, of Augusta, and Rodriquez Kintrell Jackson, 26, of Aiken.
Scruggs died after he was shot in the head during the incident, and solicitors said one of the other three men was a lookout.
Neely, Scrugg’s older brother, was called to testify Wednesday by State Solicitor Beth Ann Young.
Neely said he grew up with Carter and had known him for most of his life.
