Man who ‘terrorized’ store employees in armed robberies gets 39 years – Times Herald

WHITE PLAINS – A man convicted of zip-tying employees’ hands and holding them at gunpoint while robbing a New Windsor Rite Aid and a Town of Newburgh ShopRite of more than $26,000 was sentenced to 39 years in federal prison on Friday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced.

Lawrence Brown, 46, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Nelson Stephen Roman after a jury convicted him on March 9, 2017, of two counts of robbery and two counts of brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.

He had been charged with dressing as a Pepsi deliveryman to steal $5,911 from the Rite Aid’s safes in November 2013 and holding three employees hostage for hours before stealing $20,140 from the ShopRite safes in April 2014.

Deadwood to begin background checks for potential employees

DEADWOOD — The city of Deadwood will now do background checks on finalists for most full-time employment and likely those who work with children.

At its Jan. 2 meeting, the Deadwood City Commission granted permission for Mayor Chuck Turbiville to sign a contract with Vigilant Business Solutions to perform background screening services on potential city employees.

“I think this is really a good deal,” said Police Chief Kelly Fuller when asked by Turbiville to comment on the move. “We’re basically doing no background checks on our employees right now, and I think this is a good idea, just to mitigate our liability … This service checks all sorts of things, so I’m definitely in favor of this.”

The service, which allows access to an online search of millions of databases, comes in different levels of reporting. City officials discussed level one protection for all temporary, seasonal, and part-time employees. Level two protection was
