A childhood friend of the defendant testified in court Wednesday about the night his younger brother was killed in a robbery.
Patrick Neely took the stand on the second day of testimony in the trial for Rashawan Carter, 27, of Aiken. Carter has pleaded not guilty to being a part of a May 2015 home invasion at a Brown Lane residence in Hahn Village that ended with the death of one of Carter’s friends, 21-year-old Darius Scruggs.
Solicitors say Carter and Scruggs helped plan the robbery, along with Richard Jackson, 26, of Augusta, and Rodriquez Kintrell Jackson, 26, of Aiken.
Scruggs died after he was shot in the head during the incident, and solicitors said one of the other three men was a lookout.
Neely, Scrugg’s older brother, was called to testify Wednesday by State Solicitor Beth Ann Young.
Neely said he grew up with Carter and had known him for most of his life.

More than a dozen investigators, most wearing jackets marked “FBI” and all in blue protective booties, arrived in unmarked sedans and entered the concert site Tuesday to pick through the scene for clues.
The site inspection was visible by The Associated Press videographers from the 35th floor of the Mandalay Bay tower – three floors above the suite where Stephen Craig Paddock launched his barrage and later killed himself.
Authorities say 59 people were killed and more than 500 were injured Sunday night.
Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt compared the scene with a war zone. Laxalt is a former U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps member.
“Shoes, baby strollers, chairs, sunglasses, purses. The whole field was just littered with things,” Laxalt said Monday. “There were blood stains everywhere.”

As people in Middletown are reaching out to one another in an effort to end the rash of shootings in the city, no new arrests have been reported since Wednesday as police continue their investigation.
Police Chief Rodney Muterspaw said that over an eight-day period, seven shootings in four separate incidents with 50 rounds fired. Two people were arrested earlier on Wednesday, and Muterspaw said arrest warrants have been signed for two more people.
“This is out of control. … This is not normal for Middletown,” Muterspaw told the media following the meeting. “This is not about the city and the police department. It’s about the community … The message is ‘put your guns down.’”
The uptick in the black-on-black violence is the result of two groups who are feuding, the chief said. The cases are under investigation, some of which are drug-related and involve young Middletown people
