The former Oak Lawn man whose eight years on the run earned him a spot on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list was the ringleader of the gang that beat, shot and burned a 15-year-old boy in 2009, Cook County prosecutors said Tuesday.
Luis Macedo, now 29, struck the first blow in the fatal attack on Alex Arellano after the CPS student refused to say he was affiliated with a gang, prosecutors said. Authorities believe Macedo fled the city soon afterward.
Macedo was arrested in Mexico over the weekend by Mexican federal immigration officers coordinating with the FBI, according to an FBI news release. On Tuesday, he appeared in Cook County court on murder charges and was ordered held on $10 million bond.
