AUSTIN, TX — Austin police were joined by FBI agents and state law enforcement officials in announcing the placement of a former University of Texas student on the “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” in connection to the death of a woman in 1983.
In an afternoon press conference, officials with the FBI, the Texas Department of Public Safety, Travis County District Attorney’s Office and U.S. Marshals Service staged a press briefing on their search for Robert Van Wisse, of San Antonio, wanted in connection with the death of Laurie Stout, who was 22 at the time of her death.
Austin police found Stout strangled to death in an office building in September 1983. Van Wisse emerged as the suspect in the case, but officials have been unable to make an arrest after he fled the country, perhaps to Mexico or Central America, officials said.
